Nelson to fully cost biomass energy system

Nelson city council has approved the spending of up to $100,000 for a detailed costing of a District Energy System.

Nelson Hydro has done the early feasibility study on what would be a $5 million project.

A biomass plant in the downtown would burn wood waste from local mills and pipe hot water heating to various large buildings.

The city’s Corporate Climate Action Coordinator is Fiona Galbraith.

The first phase could include Kootenay Lake Hospital, the NDCC and Civic Arena among other public buildings.

Biomass heating would replace natural gas, dramatically cut Nelson’s greenhouse gas emissions and make revenue in the long-term.
