Local MP gets push for horse slaughter bill

Local MP Alex Atamanenko is hoping some powerful support from the US will help give his bill on banning horse slaughter some impetus.

The Southern Interior New Democrat held a press conference Thursday morning in Ottawa with a Florida senator.

Joseph Abruzzo has further strengthened the US ban by securing extra language in legislation.

The US ban means horses – mainly former racehorses that were given various dangerous chemicals – are being sent to Canada for slaughter.

Atamanenko’s bill would ban horse slaughter in this country unless the animal was raised for human consumption and has a lifetime medical record.
