US soccer star in Queen City

Former US, English Premiership and Vancouver Whitecaps soccer star Jay DeMerit is in Nelson today.

He opened the three day Vancouver Whitecaps youth soccer camp at lakeside.

Speaking on 1035 The Juice earlier DeMerit says his new role as a Whitecaps Ambassador gives him the opportunity to share his own personal tale of perseverance.

Demerit has had an improbable soccer career.

He wasn’t drafted to MLS after college but was playing in the ninth tier of the English game – getting about $60 per week – before being discovered by London club watford.

He went on to play in the 2010 World Cup.
