Fry Creek wildfire still burning

A month after it resulted in some Johnsons Landing and Birchdale residents being put on evacuation alert, the Fry Creek wildfire is still burning.

The alert has long since been cancelled and the fire, 15 kilometers north of Kaslo on the east side of Kootenay Lake, is classified as being held. But the BC Wildfire service says the 900-hectare blaze is still active.

A cold front on Monday brought gusty winds which did not result in significant growth and the fire did not threaten to jump its containment lines, the wildfire services said in a Facebook post.

However, they said an increase in smoke may continue to be seen from surrounding communities due to understory burning that is happening within the fire’s perimeter. Crews continue to monitor the fire.
