Fire destroys Meadow Creek saw mill

A fire has destroyed a key part of the Meadow Creek Forest Products saw mill at the north end of Kootenay Lake.

Rural Kaslo area director Andy Shadrack says he was going to visit the site today and ensure no one was hurt and how this incident will affect those who were working there.

The RCMP says the mill had a rudimentary fire suppression system but it’s effectiveness was inhibited by the effects of the cold weather.

Despite the efforts of mill works there was no way to fight the fire. The site is a 45 minute drive from the Kaslo fire hall.

It’s believed around a dozen people are employed at the troubled mill which has only recently come into new ownership.

Erica Bird is the chair of the Kaslo and District Community Forest Board.

Bird says while they don’t have a business relationship with the new Meadow Creek mill owners there is always hope that something could start up in future.
