Alleged robber fled custody in attempt to see his kids

An alleged armed robber who was sentenced to five months in jail Tuesday for escaping custody in Nelson says he did it because of his kids.

34 year old Andrew Stevenson was handed the prison term in court via video link from Kamloops.

In September he dropped his crutches while being escorted into a side-door of the Nelson court for a bail hearing in connection with his charges for multiple armed robbery.

He was not shackled because he claims he has a serious hip injury following his initial arrest in April- he also ran from authorities then.

He was caught by the Sheriff within a few blocks after trying to dodge through traffic.

During the sentencing proceedings the court heard how Stevenson- who has a minimal criminal record – told the arresting Sheriff ” I just wanted to see my kids.”

Defence lawyer Ken Wyllie.

Wyllie told the judge Stevenson had acknowledged his impulsive and very foolish act.
