In addition to the health concerns that have long been levelled at smart meters another issue has been raised as Fortis BC rolls out its devices.
Our region is slated for installations later this year and critics have voiced concerns about fire risk with what are still unproven devices and if a homeowner (not the insurer) might ultimately be liable.
Mysterious fires caused by a few BC Hydro smart meters and Saskatchewan’s decision to remove their new devices because of fires have helped stoke the worries.
Fortis BC spokesman David Wylie says they’ve had no fire issues
He says their meters are safe, different to the ones in Saskatchewan, and he’s unaware of any reason why the safe installation of a meter would impact home insurance.
But critics insist Fortis BC should offer customers the choice to refuse the new meter as BC Hydro does.
