SHSS fire an arson investigation as school remains closed

Castlegar RCMP are treating the fire at Stanley Humphries Secondary school as suspicious as the school remains closed Friday.

Police are investigating after the school was safely evacuated due to a blaze started in a boy’s bathroom Wednesday.

Sergeant Laurel Matthew says it appears the fire started with the burning of toilet paper.

Matthew says not only is it an inconvenience to have the school closed but it is scary for the community and they need to get to the bottom of it.

The Castlegar Fire Department estimates the damage to be worth approximately $10,000.

Schools officials have decided to keep the school closed Friday as air vents still need to be cleaned out.
