It’s time to shift thinking from Nelson being all about the car to being more pedestrian-friendly.
This from councillor Michael Dailly as council voted in favour of the first $4 million phase of the Hall St Corridor Project Monday night.
He says the Hall Street link to the waterfront should not be a throughfare – just as Baker and Vernon Streets also focus on walkability.
Some councillors voted against the plans that feature many so-called sidewalk ‘bulb-outs’ at intersections to slow traffic and make things safer for pedestrians. They argue these will create more traffic snags and could hamper delivery truck access.
But Dailly and other councilors agree with the stance of the design consultants who says the bulb-outs will help shift the heirarchy from the car towards pedestrians.
