The City of Nelson has reopened its e-Bike Financing Program for the spring 2026 intake, allowing residents to finance new or used e-bikes and bicycles through their Nelson Hydro utility bill.
Since its launch in 2020, the city said the program has provided more than 200 low-interest loans to local homeowners, helping people replace some car trips with cycling.
Both electric and non-electric bikes are eligible, which the city said makes active transportation more accessible and affordable.
The program is part of the city’s climate plan, Nelson Next, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare the community for climate impacts.
“Transportation remains Nelson’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, and shifting trips to walking, cycling and e-bikes is one of the most effective ways to reduce pollution while improving health, affordability and mobility in the community,” said the city in a press release.
To support this transition, the city has continued to invest in active transportation infrastructure such as bike lanes and secure bike parking, in addition to programs like the Nelson Hydro on-bill financing program.
“Together, these efforts help make low-carbon transportation options safer, more reliable and easier to choose,” added city officials.

The e-Bike Financing Program provides low-interest, on-bill financing for Nelson homeowners.
Eligible purchases include electric and non-electric bikes, as well as related accessories.
Loans are applied directly to the homeowner’s Nelson Hydro bill and can be repaid over two or five years at a fixed interest rate of 3.5 per cent. Each household can borrow up to $8,000, which can cover more than one bike.
Residents interested in learning more or applying can connect with city staff and local bike shops at the Green Home and Energy Show Spring Expo on April 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Nelson Prestige Lakeside Resort.
