Nelson Fire & Rescue will conduct four days of wildland interface training starting Friday as crews sharpen their response to fast-moving wildfire threats near homes.
The training runs April 17 to 20 in the Lions Park area, with 15 to 25 participants each day. Three to five fire engines will be involved in live training exercises in the afternoons.
The course, titled “Responding to the Interface”, focuses on rapid initial attack when multiple homes are threatened by wildfire.
International Association of Fire Fighters instructors from Kamloops, Chilliwack and Montana will deliver the federally funded course to local Nelson and Regional District of Central Kootenay crews, as well as participants from as far away as Big White and Elkford.
Engine training operations will take place each afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. on Kootenay, Delbruck and Falls streets. All roads and park access will remain open.
“Lions Park will be a great place to view real live firetrucks in action across the street as they simulate fire attack in the side yards of private homes,” the city said in a press release.
“A big thank you goes out to the participating departments, visiting instructors, as well as the local homeowners who are supporting this valuable training experience.”
