Southeast Fire Centre lifts Category 2 open fire ban

Category 2 open fires are once again allowed in the Southeast Fire Centre, effective at noon today.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, the change means people can now burn material in one or two piles, with each pile no larger than two metres high and three metres wide.

Burning stubble or grass is also permitted over an area no larger than 0.2 hectares.

Fireworks, binary exploding targets, burn barrels and burn cages, as well as controlled-air incinerators, are also permitted.

However, Category 3 open fires remain prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre.

Those are larger-scale fires, including burns involving three or more piles, piles larger than two metres high and three metres wide, or larger areas of grass or stubble.

The use of air curtain burners and carbonizers is also not allowed.

Anyone choosing to light a fire is reminded to follow provincial fire regulations, including not leaving a fire unattended and making sure it is fully extinguished before leaving the area.
