Wildlife wanders back into Nelson neighbourhoods

Wildlife activity is picking up again in Nelson, particularly in the Fairview area, where a bear has reportedly been accessing unsecured garbage.

As a result, WildSafeBC is reminding residents and businesses to do their part in reducing wildlife attractants.

“It is imperative that residents and businesses do not store their garbage outside and accessible to wildlife,” said WildSafeBC Nelson community coordinator Lisa Thomson.

“This does carry a City of Nelson bylaw infraction, as well as increasing the chances a bear may be lethally removed due to non-natural food conditioning.”

In addition to bears, Thomson warns deer and wild turkeys are more active on roads, creating additional hazards for drivers, especially at dusk and dawn.

“Take extra care during dawn and dusk when driving, to avoid collisions,” Thomson said.

Residents are urged to follow the WildSafeBC Nelson Facebook page for updates on local wildlife activity, upcoming events and information on how to reduce human-wildlife conflict.
