SD8 approves balanced budget for 2026–27

Kootenay Lake School District 8 (SD8) has approved an $88.2-million budget for the 2026–27 school year, marking a modest increase despite continued enrolment decline.

The budget passed unanimously at the May 12 board of education meeting. The district said in a press release that it is up about $630,000 from the current year’s amended budget.

The district is projecting enrolment to reach 4,509 full-time equivalent students next year, reflecting a drop of about 109 from the current 4,618.

Despite that drop, SD 8 said the budget maintains a focus on classroom supports, including staffing for teachers, educational assistants and student services.

It is also projecting a small increase in educational assistant staffing, which is budgeted to increase despite lower projected enrolment.

Board chair Susan Chew said the plan keeps student needs at the centre while maintaining financial stability.

“I am pleased that the Board was able to approve a balanced budget that continues to prioritize supports for students while maintaining responsible financial stewardship and stability for the district,” Chew said.

The district added that the budget aligns with its 2024–29 strategic plan and the provincially mandated Framework for Enhancing Student Learning.

All B.C. school districts must approve a balanced budget by June 30 each year.
