Free transit across for Clean Air Day

Transit riders across West Kootenay will be able to ride free Tuesday for Clean Air Day.

Clean Air Day is a nationwide campaign held annually on June 3 to raise awareness about air quality and climate change, as well as inspire people to consider changing habits to decrease their individual greenhouse gas emissions.

In honour of Clean Air Day, BC Transit and local governments are offering all riders of the West Kootenay Transit System, including handyDART customers, free fares for the entire day.

“Shifting to more environmentally sustainable modes of transportation, such as transit, drastically reduces the number of single occupant vehicles on the road, reduces traffic, and helps achieve an overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants in support the Province of B.C.’s CleanBC Plan,” BC Transit said in a press release.

As part of this work, BC Transit is delivering Phase 1 of its Electric Bus Project, which will see 125 electric buses deployed across eight transit systems, including Nelson, Kamloops, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Powell River, the Sunshine Coast, Victoria and Whistler.

Looking ahead, BC Transit said it is also working to procure heavy-duty hybrid buses as part of its longer-term emissions reduction strategy.
