The City of Nelson is offering a free bike valet service at this summer’s Wednesday Downtown Markets and Night Markets in an effort to encourage more people to cycle to community events.
The city said in a news release the bike valet provides cyclists with a secure place to leave their bicycles while they shop and explore the market. Staff monitor the fenced bike parking area throughout each event, giving riders peace of mind while supporting the local market.
Visitors can also meet the city’s water and sustainability ambassador to learn about local water conservation programs and climate initiatives.
The bike valet is funded through the B.C. Cycling Coalition and the Province of B.C. for the 2026 market season.
City climate and energy strategist Emily Mask said the program is intended to make cycling a more convenient option for residents while helping reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.
“Choosing to bike to the market is a simple way for residents to reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions, and stay active while supporting local businesses,” Mask said. “The bike valet makes it easier than ever to leave the car at home and enjoy everything our markets have to offer.”
The service will be available at Wednesday Downtown Markets throughout the summer, as well as the Night Markets on July 24 and Aug. 21.
