RDCK monitoring 56 active wildfires across Southeast Fire Centre

The Regional District of Central Kootenay continues to monitor wildfire activity across the region as crews respond to several active fires in the Southeast Fire Centre.

According to the district’s Emergency Operations Centre, there are 56 active wildfires in the Southeast Fire Centre, including 29 listed as out of control.

The Poplar Creek wildfire, about 60 kilometres north of Kaslo in Electoral Area D, has grown to 162 hectares since it was discovered July 26. The RDCK said BC Wildfire Service is using crews and helicopters to limit its spread.

An area restriction has been in place for the Poplar Creek area since Aug. 1. An evacuation alert also issued Aug. 1 remains in effect for properties in the area, along with an area restriction implemented by BC Wildfire Service.

The Inonoaklin Creek wildfire, northwest of the Needles Ferry in Electoral Area K, has grown to 1,223 hectares since it was discovered July 25. BC Wildfire Service is using heavy equipment, crews and helicopters to limit its spread. An evacuation alert issued July 28 remains in effect, along with a BC Wildfire Service area restriction.

Meanwhile, BC Wildfire Service is also monitoring the Mt. Freya wildfire, northwest of Winlaw. The fire has grown to 367.8 hectares since it was discovered July 25.

It is burning in steep, high-elevation terrain that is unsafe for crews to access. As a result, BC Wildfire is using a modified response strategy while actively monitoring the fire.

BC Wildfire said the Mt. Freya wildfire is not threatening homes or critical infrastructure, but response objectives and tactics will change if it begins to threaten identified values.

The RDCK said wildfire conditions can change quickly and is encouraging residents to stay informed through BC Wildfire and district updates.
