Nelson crews step in to help Summerland recover from wildfire

When the Bald Range wildfire damaged critical infrastructure in Summerland, Nelson crews were among those who stepped in to help.

The city sent a Nelson Hydro line crew and public works vacuum and gravel trucks to assist with restoring power and other essential services. They returned home this week.

“To see our Nelson Hydro and Public Works crews volunteer without hesitation makes me so proud of the team at the City of Nelson,” Nelson Hydro general manager Dan Geissler said in a press release.

“We’re glad we were able to help our neighbours.”

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services also provided additional fire suppression equipment to support Summerland crews battling the blaze.

The request for assistance was coordinated through Summerland’s emergency operations centre.

The city said the deployment was part of mutual aid agreements that allow communities to share crews and equipment during emergencies.

It’s the latest examples of the two communities stepping in to help one another during an emergency. In January 2021, Summerland crews helped Nelson Hydro restore power to 4,000 urban and rural customers following a severe windstorm.
