Kootenay Friends of Standing Together will host a documentary screening in Nelson next weekend to raise money for a campaign supporting Palestinian olive farmers in the West Bank.
The regional peace group will screen Holding Liat at Nelson United Church on Saturday, Oct. 3, as a fundraiser for the Protect the Harvest campaign.
The campaign describes itself as an international coalition working with Palestinian communities during the 2026 olive harvest, with participants accompanying farmers and helping with the harvest.
Holding Liat, directed by Brandon Kramer, was shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature at the 2026 Academy Awards.
The film follows the family of Israeli-American Liat Beinin Atzili after she was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz during the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. It focuses in part on her father, Yehuda Beinin, and the family’s efforts to secure her release while grappling with the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Atzili was released from captivity on Nov. 29, 2023, after being held for more than 50 days. Her husband, Aviv Atzili, was killed during the Oct. 7 attack.
Organizers said Beinin will provide a video update for the Nelson audience following the screening.
Beinin is a member of the Parents Circle-Families Forum, a joint Israeli-Palestinian organization bringing together people who have lost family members in the conflict and advocating dialogue and reconciliation.
Kootenay Friends of Standing Together supports Standing Together, a Jewish-Arab grassroots movement in Israel that campaigns for peace, equality and an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.
Doors at Nelson United Church, 602 Silica St., open at 6:30 p.m., with the film beginning at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $15 and are available at Otter Books, at the door or online here.
