Council to decide on Commons affordable concept

Will Nelson city council vote against its own Housing Committee Monday tonight?

It will decide whether to support a request from the Nelson Commons developers regarding affordable housing.

They’re proposing a 25% discount on three of their 54 units and having a “restricted resale” covenant on them. This is instead of putting a cash sum into the city’s Affordable Housing Fund.

They’ve asked the city to administer the process by which families would apply to buy those units.

They’re also asking for connection fees to be waived.

The Housing Committee has already voted against the idea mainly because other developers did not receive this incentive in the past.

Normally developers of new multi-unit projects are obliged to donate money into Affordable Housing Fund.
