Dance West Network (a non-profit focused on bringing people together through dance) is bringing FREE street dance workshops to Nelson September 25-27!

Nelson will welcome Vancouver-based street dance artists Isaac Gasangwa/Izo Dreamchaser, Sevrin Emnacen-Boyd and Joshua Ongcol for three days of free workshops, an artist talk, Community Cypher and public conversation on hip-hop and street dance culture. Workshops in Breaking, AfroBeats, House and Vogue/Waacking will offer opportunities for youth, older teens, adults and the wider community to take part.

The Community Cypher offers a particularly unique opportunity for the Nelson community to experience street dance culture. Rather than a traditional performance where the audience and dancers are separated, a cypher brings everyone together in a circle to share energy, movement and encouragement. As Sevrin explains, it is “a place where one can freely express themselves through movement and feel supported by those who surround us.” The weekend will also create an opportunity to talk about the culture and history behind these dance forms, with an artist talk and a public conversation on hip-hop and street dance culture, bringing together the general public, students, local artists and practitioners, and dance teachers.
