Bears extend trail closure

Users of a popular section of rail trail outside Nelson will have to give the bears a few more weeks.

The RDCK says it will extend its annual closure of the Nelson-Salmo stretch near Cottonwood Lake by a few more weeks.

It was shut in May and is now set to re-open June 29th.

The area has some high value eating habitat for bears – including grizzlies- and is closed off in the spring for public safety reasons.

Bear-sightings have continued in the area.
