UPDATED: Sitkum-Duhamel Creek wildfire grows/evac alert remains

Sunday 2:20 pm – statement from RDCK:-

Residents of the Duhamel and Sitkum Creek area are still on evacuation alert as a wildfire continues to burn.

Ground fire and flight crews, with the aid of water bombers and a tanker, continue to battle the blaze. The fire is approximately 120 hectares in size. Currently, the prevailing winds are moving the fire up the mountain.

RDCK mapping indicates there are approximately 350 residences in the impacted area. The alert will be in effect until further notice.

If an evacuation order is issued, emergency personnel will alert impacted residents by visiting their homes.

Notices will be posted in neighbourhoods. Also, the alert will be broadcast on local radio as well as on the RDCK’s Facebook page and website.

Statement from BC Wildfire Management Sunday morning:-

The wildfire burning about 4km north of Kootenay Lake, between Sitkum and Duhamel Creeks had grown to 150 hectares by Sunday morning.

It was measured at 60 hectares Saturday.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) Emergency Operations Centre  imposed an evacuation alert late Saturday.

About 350 residents in the area between Sitkum Creek South and Willow Point (Six Mile Lakes Road) are affected by this precautionary measure , due to erratic wind conditions. Residents will be notified should conditions worsen.

25 firefighters with extensive helicopter and airtanker support are tackling the blaze.
