Should Castlegar move to full Bear Smart status?

Is the Bear Smart program right for Castlegar?

That was the focal point of a presentation at Tuesday night’s city council meeting from Jenny Wallace of WildSafe BC.

The voluntary program promotes reducing human-bear conflict.

There are six areas of criteria that must be met to achieve the designation of Bear Smart status.

Wallace says Castlegar has met four of those points, but the other two are achievable.


While there are no immediate plans from council to join, she believes the program would be a great thing for the city if they take part.

The main cause of run-ins with bears is attractants being left out for them, usually garbage or rotted fruit in composts.
