Local First Nations leader backs treaty reforms

A Creston area First Nations leader is applauding new reforms to BC’s treaty negotiations process.

An agreement between BC, the Feds and First Nations Summit sets the groundwork for smoother methods to negotiate more land treaties in less time.

The reforms include deadlines to reach settlements.

Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie says ultimately each first nation needs to prioritize treaty talks.

Treaty reforms include options that take the pressure off the parties to reach one final, all-encompassing land-claims treaty.

Instead it would allow for the option of reaching treaties in steps.
