Nelson firefighters head to salary arbitration

Nelson’s 11 professional firefighters are going to salary arbitration with the city.

Outgoing International Association of Fire Fighters district 6 vice-president Lorne West says they’ve been without a contract since 2011.

And despite recent increases they’re still paid less than other BC firefighters.

But West says it’s not a bitter dispute.

It’s not clear exactly what the firefighters are asking for or what the city is offering.

The previous contract also went to arbitration and resulted in a 24.5 per cent wage increase.
