Clean-up of ferry oil spill nearly finished

The clean-up of the oil leak from the Osprey 2000 ferry at Balfour is nearly complete.

The ferry spilled gear oil on Saturday morning.

A faulty piece of equipment was removed from the ferry Tuesday.

Ferry operator Western Pacific Marine recovered two barrels of emulsified oil and water from the leaking machinery.

It came to just over 416 litres but they’re waiting unitil the oil settles to determine the exact amount spilled.

However it’s less than originally thought.

A boom around the boat was removed Wednesday evening.

Monitoring and sampling has been done along the sore as far as Heuston road.

Water samples taken this week should be back by Friday.

Experts say oil seen on the water will dissipate if it hasn’t already.

The Osprey is out of service until the end of the month for regular maintenance.
