UPDATED: Nelson burglar involved in fatal crash, police say

Nelson police are trying to find a man who broke into Ted Allen’s Jewellery early Monday. They believe he was also involved in a fatal crash near hope later that day.

Police say he used a hammer to smash the front window and then smashed several glass display cases and stole numerous items.

The total value of the stolen items and the damage is estimated at $30,000.

The man was wearing a disguise, but police believe they know who he is.

Later that day a 35-year-old woman died when an SUV that she was a passenger in collided with a maintenance truck.

Sgt. Nate Holt says they believe the SUV was stolen from Nelson and that the driver was the man who broke into Ted Allen’s.

The suspect fled in a BC Wildfire Service truck and remains at large.

Holt says some items recovered at the scene may be from the jewelry store break-in.
