Construction on Hall Street to start next week

The lower section of Hall Street will start to look a lot different soon. A detour will be in place as early as next week for access to Lakeside Drive as the City of Nelson moves forward with upgrades to the underground infrastructure. Director of Public Works and Utilities Colin Innes says you’ll have to go through Cedar Street to get to Lakeside.

He says there will still be some business access before the rail tracks.

Innes says this stage of construction should take about six weeks. There are four stages in total,  each six weeks long. It’s part of the City’s Stores to Shores project which includes new underground infrastructure to mitigate the risk of flooding in the area. When completed Hall Street will have new sidewalks, road resurfacing, street lights, and landscaping.

The City says it’s taking measures to mitigate the impact of construction on residents and businesses including free customer parking at the corner of Front and Hall Streets, promotion of impacted businesses, and maintaining pedestrian access to the waterfront.
