Fatal crash near Grohman Narrows

A man died after a car went over a bank and into the Kootenay River west of Nelson this morning.

Nelson Fire & Rescue was called to the area just before 7:00am at Grohman Narrows on Highway 3A and 6. Fire Fighter Mark Thibault says the rope rescue team deployed a rope system to assist with movement of personnel on the steep embankment in the area.

Thibault says a 70-year-old Nelson man didn’t survive, even though witnesses jumped in to help.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. There were no other injuries.

Seven fire fighters responded as well as included B.C. Ambulance Services, Nelson City Police, RCMP, Dr. Nic Sparrow, Nelson Search and Rescue, the Coroner’s Office, CP Railway, and the Ministry of Transportation.
