Wildsight BC holding public meetings next week

Wildsight BC says the South Purcell Mountains are a crucial area for wildlife.

They’re holding public meetings to connect with the community about the proposed Retallack adventure tourism area. Wildsight’s Eddie Petryshyn says the year-round recreational activities would have substantial impacts on sensitive species.

The 177,000 acre year-round operation is a partnership between Retallack and the Lower Kootenay Band. It would include a variety of activities including hiking, horseback riding, climbing, guided ski touring, heli-skiing and mountaineering.

Petryshyn says helicopter recreation in particular can put a lot of stress on wildlife.

He says the area is crucial for wildlife including grizzly bears, mountain goats, mountain caribou and more.

Wildsight is holding public meetings around the area next week to connect with the community and discuss impacts of the tenure proposal.
