Lower Kootenay Band member wants consultation on Retallack proposal for South Purcells

Not all members of the Lower Kootenay Band are in favour of a proposed heli bike and ski development in the South Purcell Mountains. Rob Louie Junior has some concerns that he’s taken to the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

The proposal covers 70,000 hectares on Kootenay Lake’s East Shore and is a joint partnership with Retallack and the Lower Kootenay Band. Louie says it’s not only the impacts to the ecosystem and wildlife that are a problem, but whether proper consultation was done.

He says that could include the larger Ktunaxa Nation as well.

He says he’s also spoken to the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

He says the project won’t necessarily come to an end, but several meaningful consultation sessions are required as it’s been deemed a ‘high status’ by the Province in terms of its impacts to the landscape.
