Plans for a new private seniors’ assisted living development moved forward at Nelson City Council this week. Council approved two variances for the property which is being proposed for the empty lot at 611 Vernon Street. Mayor Deb Kozak explains the variances required.
“Moving from 90 per cent to 94 per cent lot coverage and that was to accommodate waste disposal systems and entrance into the facility as well as a small height variance to allow for rooftop units on the building.”
Mayor Kozak says council moved forward with the first couple of readings which allows further design work to continue. The four story building would create 125 suites with one level of commercial and round the clock nursing care.
Mayor Kozak says it will provide some much needed housing.
“Once seniors are able to downsize a bit we’re hoping that some of the pressure on the housing market will decrease and that younger families will have access to larger homes and that seniors will have manageable spaces that they can live in as well.”
Mayor Kozak said the developer was open to creating some affordable units in the development and more on that will come forward as the detail design process happens.
