CBT funding will help new projects at Nelson’s youth centre

The Columbia Basin Trust has announced funding for 34 projects through their Basin PLAYS Capital Improvement Grants.  Seven of those are in Nelson including the Youth Centre who are going to build a bouldering wall and revamp the skate park into an all wheels park.

Manager at the Youth Centre Jordan Martin feels the projects will have a big impact on the space.

“I’d really like the youth centre to be a place where all young people in Nelson come and flock to and get services that they need and have activities that they enjoy and having the all-wheels park and the bouldering wall will really support that.”

The bouldering wall will be located at the front of the building in a little dome, Martin explains, and about 10 feet high. The skate park will also receive improvements to create a beginner area all the way to an advanced area, so kids and youth of all ages can use it.

The CBT’s grant was worth almost $17,500 and the hope it to have the project ready for May or June. The total cost is over $28,000 with the City funding 30 per cent and $4,000 coming from Pal Gals, an organization focusing on country awareness.

The CBT has distributed $500,000 in total to help children and youth grow their confidence and get healthier. Other projects include $13,556 to the Selkirk Challengers Gymnastics Club to purchase equipment for parkour programming, $25,000 to the Nakusp Nakusp and Area Bike Society to develop a youth bike skills park at Mt. Abriel Nakusp, and $6,025 for the Nelson Nelson Circus Performers Association to purchase three portable aerial rigs for Discover Circus to make classes more accessible to kids in Basin communities.
