A business that’s been located in the heart of downtown Nelson for roughly 80 years has to close by the end of the year. Mari Plamondon and her husband Jim bought Wait’s News at the corner of Ward and Baker Streets in 2009. There’s a new landlord for the building, which also encompasses Kurama Sushi, Shoe La La, Loot and the antique store. Wait’s News is the only one undergoing renovations, which will be the first time since its opening.
The store has a long history in the community, Mari explains.
“It’s the oldest coffee shop in Nelson and is the oldest original store front, other than the banks.”
She isn’t sure exactly what the future holds for her and her husband and is sad to see its closure. Waits News was originally opened by Walter Waits and his vision for the coffee shop has been maintained. The space provides more than just a quick bite or hot drink.
“I think that in the last 10 years we’ve kind of gotten to be known as a place where it doesn’t matter how down and out you are, or anything else. You’re still welcome to sit and have a cup of coffee, use our bathroom and just be part of the community.”
Mari says she understands the landlord’s business decision, but feels the loss will impact many.
“Everyday somebody comes in and tells me, I worked here when I was 15 or I’ve been coming here since I was a little kid with my parents for an ice cream. People walk in the door and are always so awestruck that it’s the same way it’s always been.”
The store currently has five staff members but Mari says she’s had up to 13 at one time. She’s provided job opportunities for many in the community who are struggling and in need of a part time job.
