Council denies non-medical cannabis applicant for downtown store

A fourth non-medical cannabis retail store interested in operating in downtown Nelson had their application denied by city council this week. Only two are allowed to operate in the downtown, but council has already allowed a Temporary Use Permit for a third.

A second Temporary Use Permit application was submitted by Quadz Cannabis for 752 Vernon Street, which council voted against on Monday in a very quick decision.

Council has approved recommendations for four stores and there are still two licenses available for storefronts outside of the downtown, for example in Railtown.

The recommendation to deny the application will be passed onto the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch. The Province will only approve an application if the municipality’s Council recommends approval as part of a referral process.
