NELSON, B.C. – A 29-year old woman is in hospital with serious injuries after being assaulted by an attacker in a stabbing Thursday afternoon on Baker Street. A man who tried to stop the attacker was injured during the incident.
Nelson police say multiple calls came in around 5:30 on Thursday evening that two people, a man and a woman, had been attacked in the intersection of Stanley and Baker Street.
Police say the woman was found at the scene with serious knife injuries.
She was treated on-site but later transported to hospital where she remains in stable condition after sustaining at least 5 stab wounds to her body and arm.
The man appeared to be conscious and speaking to ambulance personnel on the scene before he was taken away on a stretcher.
Multiple witnesses say the man tried to intervene when the attacker approached the woman.
Eyewitnesses speaking to MyNelsonNow.com described the attacker as a woman who looked to be in her 50s, with a slim build.
One man says he saw the woman “skipping” down the street, with a brandished knife moments before the attack took place.
“She was walking with the blade out”, he said.
Witnesses said the attack appeared unprovoked and random.
Sergeant Nate Holt with the Nelson police department confirms one woman is in custody and has been transported to hospital for injuries she sustained during the incident.
“Although the investigation is ongoing, at this time police do not believe that the victim and suspect knew each other”, Holt wrote in a news release.
