A thumbs-up from West Kootenay Traffic Services on new BC penalties for distracted driving starting next week.
On top of the $167 fine for talking on a hand held phone, or using a GPS or video twill driving there will now be a three point penalty on a driver’s record.
If that exceeds 3 points in a year they’ll face higher insurance premiums.
Sgt John Ferguson says cell phone use has become a major safety issue.
There are already licence points penalties if you’re caught texting.
