The City of Nelson has been recognized on an international level for its innovative approach to natural infrastructure.
A new report by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) highlights Nelson as a model for other cities in showcasing effective policy changes to implement natural infrastructure when addressing infrastructure needs.
The report stated that while most municipalities rely on “grey” infrastructure such as dams, pipes, and treatment facilities, Nelson is a leader in its approach to complementing those infrastructure systems with natural solutions, such as wetlands, trees, grasslands, and rain gardens, to enhance service delivery in the face of climate change.
Despite its smaller size and limited resources compared to larger cities, the report stated that Nelson is implementing these natural approaches successfully, which is in part credited to the city’s strategic Subdivision and Development Servicing Bylaw and the Municipal Tree Bylaw.
IISD highlighted that these natural infrastructure solutions are not just cost-effective compared to traditional infrastructure, but also bring environmental and economic advantages to municipalities needing to meet important water-related needs while working alongside nature.
The report stated that Nelson’s approach demonstrates that municipalities can develop solutions and successfully work with nature to meet infrastructure needs, regardless of size.
