Nelson Leafs on top of Neil Murdoch Division

After three weeks into the regular season, the Nelson Leafs have claimed top position on the Neil Murdoch Division ladder, after defeating the Columbia Valley Rockies 4-3 at home over the weekend.

Ryan Konecsni gave the Leafs their first lead over the Columbia Valley Rockies, and helped to set up Caden Still for a first minute goal in the 3rd period, which ended up as the game winning goal for the home side. Goalie Devin Degenstein made 32 saves to help secure his team the win.

Meanwhile, Brendan Smith makes over 30 stops for Creston Valley as they beat the Grizzlies 2-1 on Friday, and then had to return between the pipes in relief for Jacob Burnside in a 6-2 loss to Sicamous.

In other games, Grand Forks Border Bruins fell short to Beaver Valley Nitehawks 6-1 on Friday, leaving work to be done against Spokane for game two over the weekend. Drake Olineck’s first KIJHL goal was the winner for the Border Bruins at the Eagles Ice Arena against the Braves.

Meanwhile, Beaver Valley Nitehawks split their two weekend games, opening with their win over the Grand Forks Border Bruins, then a 3-2 overtime loss to the Fernie Ghostriders.

The Nitehawks lead with five shorthanded goals in six games. Scoring those goals are Marcus Cyr, Connor Drake, Hunter Hansen, Brady Magarrell and Connor Martel.
