City of Nelson eyes tighter rules for oversized-vehicle parking

The City of Nelson might tighten enforcement around oversized vehicles and angle parking downtown.

Councillor Leslie Payne raised the issue at the beginning of November after noticing an increase in large trucks extending into the roadway.

“This would be a great time to tighten up on the vehicle length by law because there have been a number of times when I either had to stop or cross the center line to get around a truck,” said Payne.

She added that snow in the winter often narrows usable road space, making the problem more pronounced.

The city already has a truck length limit of six metres in its traffic bylaw, but staff said enforcement has been difficult because drivers may not know the rule exists.

“I think the problem with traffic and parking bylaws, I understand it, is that people just aren’t aware of the parking length,” said city planner Natalie Andrijancic.

“So we’re going to work on putting signage around town just saying oversized vehicles extending beyond that painted line.”

Andrijancic said clearer signage will allow the city to begin issuing warning tickets to people who exceed the stall length.

CAO Kevin Cormack suggested placing notices directly on the city’s parking meters so motorists see them at the point of payment.

Andrijancic said staff would explore this option and app notifications now that the city offers a mobile payment option.
