Two arrested after stolen vehicle recovered in Nelson patrol

A stolen vehicle was recovered and two people were arrested within 20 minutes of being reported missing Sunday night, Nelson police said.

On April 5, at approximately 10:43 p.m., the Nelson Police Department received a report of a stolen vehicle. The vehicle had been parked at the Ymir Road park-and-ride and was discovered missing when the owner returned.

At 11:01 p.m., while patrolling for the vehicle, officers located it parked in the 2800 block of Perrier Road. Police arrested two occupants at the scene: a man in the driver’s seat and a female passenger.

During a search incidental to the man’s arrest, officers located a wallet belonging to another individual, several vehicle keys from different makes and 3.63 grams of suspected methamphetamine. Further investigation revealed the man was bound by a court-ordered release and was breaching three conditions, including a prohibition on occupying the driver’s seat of any motor vehicle.

The 20-year-old woman, who has no criminal record, was later released from custody on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.

The man was held in custody for a bail hearing and faces the following charges:

  • Theft of a motor vehicle, Section 333.1(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of stolen property, Section 355(b) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of a controlled substance, Section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Three counts of failing to comply with a release order, Section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code

He is scheduled to appear in court on April 8.

“I’m proud of the work our officers did on this file. They spotted the stolen vehicle quickly, handled the arrest safely, and followed through with a solid investigation. It’s a great job by our members and a real example of the commitment they bring to keeping our community safe.” Insp. Jason Jewkes said.
