Bystanders pull driver from pickup truck that plunged into Kootenay Lake

Three bystanders went into Kootenay Lake on Saturday afternoon to rescue a woman from her sinking pickup truck after it went over an embankment at the Chahko Mika Mall parking lot, police said.

The Nelson Police Department said it received several 911 calls at 1:18 p.m. reporting that a pickup truck had driven over the embankment and into the lake.

According to police, three people immediately entered the water and pulled the driver, who was alone in the truck, to safety.

By the time officers, Nelson Fire and Rescue Services crews and B.C. Emergency Health Services paramedics arrived, the woman was on shore and out of danger, police said. Paramedics assessed her and released her at the scene.

Western Auto Wreckers & Towing recovered the submerged truck from the lake, which police said kept environmental impact to a minimum.

Police said alcohol and drugs were not factors. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
