Truck crashes into Nelson patio

A truck drove into a sunken outdoor patio in downtown Nelson last week after the driver mistakenly accelerated instead of reversing.

Nelson Police responded to the incident in the 700 block of Vernon Street around 8 a.m. on Oct. 13.

Police said the driver had just picked up their morning coffee and thought the truck was in reverse when they hit the gas.

Instead, the vehicle drove forward into the patio, causing property damage. No pedestrians or other members of the public were hit, and no serious injuries were reported.

Police also said they did not observe any signs of impairment in the driver.

The driver was assessed by paramedics and taken to Kootenay Lake Hospital for further evaluation.

Police will follow up on the incident, including reviewing whether the driver is fit to operate a motor vehicle.
