Civic Theatre renovation closer to funding goal

Fundraising for the Nelson Civic Theatre renovation is closer to the finish line following a new provincial investment.

The B.C. government is providing about $554,000 through its Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program to support the theatre’s long-planned expansion and modernization of the historic downtown venue.

The renovation broke ground in April. The total project cost is budgeted at about $7.4 million. The provincial contribution is helping close the remaining $2.4 million gap.

Nelson Civic Theatre Society Executive Director Eleanor Stacey said in a press release that the funding marks an important step for both the organization and the community.

“The Civic Theatre has always been a gathering place, a cultural anchor and an economic driver for downtown Nelson,” Stacey said. “This funding helps us create a more accessible, welcoming and financially sustainable facility.”

The project is expected to be completed within the year. Stacey previously said the society hopes to welcome audiences back by Christmas.
