Nelson set to kick off FIFA festivities at Lakeside

FIFA fever is expected to hit Nelson hard tomorrow afternoon as the soccer fields at Lakeside Park transform into a festival of colour, kids and kicks when soccer hits the big screen.

Kootenay Central MLA Brittny Anderson said the event is an opportunity for local soccer fans to gather and watch the games together.

“We will be able to watch together on the big screen down at Lakeside Park, Canada versus Switzerland, and that kicks off at noon, but the celebrations start at 11.30 and then are followed by the game of Scotland versus Brazil at three o’clock,” said Anderson.

And it is not just for the kids.

The family-friendly event brings together food vendors, a beer garden, skills booths and activities for all ages.

Anderson said the event reflects the strong soccer culture in Nelson.

“You go to Lakeside on a Saturday and it is just buzzing with kids and families, and so many of our young people and adults take part in soccer. So, to have soccer bring the community together, and now FIFA is bringing the world together,” said Anderson.

Getting there

With a large turnout expected throughout the day, organizers are encouraging attendees to plan ahead when travelling to the event.

Public parking at the Lakeside soccer fields will be closed for the event and organizers say parking in the surrounding area will be extremely limited.

Instead, attendees are encouraged to walk, cycle or take public transit.

BC Transit has announced free transit service, including handyDART, throughout the West Kootenay system on June 24 to help people get to and from the event.

“Transit, including handyDART service, will be free across the entire West Kootenay system to make it easier for people to take part in this event,” said BC Transit.

Cyclists will also have access to an on-site bike corral where they can securely leave their bicycles while attending the festivities.

Organizers said the transportation measures are intended to reduce traffic congestion and help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone attending the FIFA Canada Celebrates Caravan stop in Nelson.

The event is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. at Lakeside Park, with the Canada-Switzerland match set to start at noon.

“come down to Lakeside. Be a part of not only a community celebration, but a global celebration. You know, soccer brings the community together and FIFA is now bringing the world together. It is going to be a lot of fun,” said Anderson.
