Nelson police have been cleared of wrongdoing in an incident that saw a youth injured while lodged in department cells.
According to the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C., the youth was arrested around 11 p.m. on Aug. 11 after appearing to be intoxicated in the downtown core and becoming uncooperative with police.
When the youth was taken to the department’s cells, they sustained injuries and were later transported by ambulance to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The IIO was notified shortly after and began an investigation.
Its chief civilian director reviewed evidence including police and jail records, radio calls, video footage and medical evidence, and determined there was no connection between police actions or inaction and the youth’s injuries.
The investigation has now closed.
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
