Nelson residents invited to weigh in on 2027 budget

Budget season in Nelson has officially commenced.

The city has launched the public engagement period for the 2027 budget, inviting residents to share their perspectives on planning and priorities for the upcoming year.

Residents can learn about the proposed priorities, ask questions and share their thoughts through an online survey.

Council will approve a five-year financial plan, which includes a detailed one-year budget for 2027.

The city said the municipal budget outlines the revenues the City expects to receive and how that money will be used to deliver services, maintain infrastructure and fund projects.

Revenue comes from property taxes, utility and user fees, grants and other sources. In return, it supports services including roads, water and wastewater, parks and recreation, emergency services, garbage collection and community programs.

Council and staff must balance current service needs with long-term priorities, rising costs and infrastructure requirements, while also considering the financial impact on residents and businesses.

City council will begin hearing budget presentations on Monday, Nov. 9, starting with an introduction for new council members and presentations on water, wastewater and resource recovery rates.

Residents can attend meetings in person at City Hall, watch the livestream on YouTube or view recordings afterward.

Budget meetings will continue into February 2027, with the full schedule available on the City’s Let’s Talk website.
