The Fraser Institute’s annual school rankings is great data collection but not the be-all and end-all when it comes to judging a student’s performance.
So says Julia Mason the Principal of Trail’s St. Michael’s Elementary who were listed 121 out of 978 schools across the province in the latest report.
It was the highest of any school in our region but Mason admits she hadn’t seen the rankings.
Mason says they use the FSA assessment tests as just one of many tools.
The rankings are heavily criticized by some as an unfair snap-shot that does not take into context student progress.
Kaslo’s JV Humphries was ranked near the bottom yet SD 8 Superintendent Jeff Jones notes the combined elementary-high school has a 100% completion rate compared to the 82% provincial average.
