Nelson council picks parking over bike lanes

Nelson city council has opted to ditch bike lanes in favour of parking stalls in the 100 block of Hall Street.

They made that decision this week as they reviewed the latest design for an infrastructure project’s next phase.

Councillor Michael Dailly is an avid cyclist but says he supports the move.

Dailly says one building on that corner is home to medical clinics that need parking close by.

Seven spots will be retained as a result.

Overall, the second phase of Nelson’s Hall street project may or may not lead to a net loss of parking spots.

Rob Fershau of consultant WSP Canada says at the moment the plan calls for 25 fewer stalls.

But they feel the number of spaces on Lakeside Drive could be doubled by switching to angle parking.
